When you start designing a custom ring, the gemstone is the decision everything else gets built around. Not the metal. Not the setting. The stone.
Some people walk into our Las Vegas studio knowing exactly what they want. Others show up with a screenshot and a feeling. Either way, we'll get you there.
At Jeff White Custom Jewelry, we don’t just source pretty stones, we build pieces that hold up, hold value, and hold meaning. That starts with the right gem.

1. Start with Meaning and Style
Diamonds mean forever. Sapphires mean loyalty. Rubies mean passion. But honestly, the best gemstone is the one that means something to you — not the one a blog post told you to pick.
Think about how you actually live. Do you want something timeless and clean? Diamonds and sapphires. Want something that makes people stop and ask? Morganite, tourmaline, or a colored sapphire will do that every time.
When you design your custom engagement ring in Las Vegas, we walk you through all of it — no pressure, no upsell. See how we approach the process on our Engagement Rings in Summerlin page.
2. Consider Gemstone Durability
A ring lives on your hand. Through dishes, the gym, travel, all of it. So durability isn't a footnote — it's a real factor.
Diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. Basically indestructible. Sapphires and rubies sit at a 9 — also excellent for daily wear. Softer stones like opal or turquoise are gorgeous, but we'll be straight with you: those are better suited for occasional wear. We'd rather tell you that now than have you find out the hard way.
3. Focus on Cut and Brilliance
The cut determines how a stone handles light. A well-cut stone sparkles evenly. A poorly cut one has dead spots — and once you see it, you can't unsee it.
Round, oval, cushion, emerald — every shape has a personality. We help you find the one that fits yours. Browse our Look Book if you want to see what different cuts actually look like in a finished ring before you come in.
4. Choose a Color That Complements the Metal
This pairing matters more than most people realize.
White gold or platinum — cooler tones like blue sapphire or aquamarine look incredible here
Yellow gold — warm stones like ruby, garnet, or citrine come alive against it
Rose gold — morganite, spinel, or pink tourmaline next to rose gold is a love story
We'll show you the combinations in person so you can actually see it, not just imagine it.
5. Balance Budget and Value
We talk about budget like adults. You tell us what you're working with, we show you the best options at that number — natural stones, lab-grown stones, different sizes and clarities. No sticker shock, no awkward moments.
Jeff White Custom Jewelry is transparent about pricing. That's not a marketing line, it's just how we operate.
6. Trust Expert Guidance
You'll see your ring before it exists. We use design software to show you sketches and digital renderings before anything gets made — so you're not guessing, you're deciding.
That's the difference between buying a ring and building one.
7. Care and Maintenance
Once your ring is done, keep it that way. Regular cleaning, gentle handling, and occasional professional check-ins go a long way. If you ever need a tune-up, our Jewelry Repairs & Maintenance page has everything you need to schedule a visit.
FAQ
What gemstones are best for daily wear? Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. In that order. Softer stones like opal or moonstone are beautiful but better saved for special occasions.
Do lab-grown gemstones look different from natural ones? No. Same structure, same brilliance, same hardness. The only difference is where it came from and what it costs.
Can AI help select gemstones? It can point you in a direction, but it can't hold the stone under a loupe. That still takes a human.
Can I use a family heirloom gemstone in my custom ring? Most of the time, yes. Bring it in and we'll tell you exactly what's possible — and what it would look like in something new.
